EU agrees to put Hamas on outlawed terror groups
list

The European Union moved Thursday to increase
pressure on Hamas by adding the entire
organization to the EU terrorist list, but
appeared to stop short of a U.S. crackdown on
European-based charities that allegedly funnel
money to the Islamic militant group. [...]

Senior Foreign Ministry official, Gideon Meir,
called the EU decision "very, very helpful" in
saving Middle East peace efforts.

"As long as the Hamas has the ability of terror
activity, it means that the peace process will
never be able to get off the ground," he said
by telephone during a visit to Germany.

Meir said he didn´t have specifics on how much
funding would be blocked, but added: "The
principle is important here."

The EU diplomat said the issue of freezing
assets remained on the agenda would be studied
more in depth.

France in particular had led opposition to
blacklisting all of Hamas, wary of cutting off
avenues of negotiation or hurting the group´s
extensive social services network, including
health and education. There was no immediate
comment from French officials. [...]
