Deputy PM Olmert: killing Arafat is one option for
government

Killing Yasser Arafat is "definitely one of the
options" the government has when it comes to
putting into action the security cabinet´s
decision last week, in principle, to remove the
Palestinian Authority Chairman, deputy Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday.

"We are trying to eliminate all
the heads of terror, and Arafat
is one of the heads of terror,"
Olmert told Israel Radio. "In
my eyes, from a moral point of
view, this is no different from
killing others who were
involved in... acts of terror.
It´s only a practical question.
What is the benefit? What will the reaction be?
What circumstances will allow
this?"

Senior Palestinian official and Arafat loyalist,
Saeb Erekat, likened Olmert´s remarks to "the
thinking and action of the mafia - not a
government."

Erekat said that the practical implications of
the security cabinet´s decision were the
killing of Arafat, since he would not agree
under any circumstances to being deported, and
that his death would lead to anarchy in the
Palestinian Authority.

"Deportation would lead to killing Arafat, and
if Arafat is killed then the Palestinian
Authority is also killed," Erekat told Army
Radio. "My home town Jericho will be taken by
Palestinian militias, in Nablus and Rafah and
Khan Younis (as well). Probably the first thing
they will do is come to my house and shoot me,
and kill me and kill all Palestinian
moderates."
